canvas 1: astronaut in moon buggy Ben’s recent work has used imagery of Superman, as a symbol of freedom, justice and Western values. The cultural positioning of such hero figures is explored by means of Superman's incarnation in the now paralysed actor, Christopher Reeve. Ben is developing this approach, focusing on other popular imagery which in some way seeks to represent an ideology but which never lives up to expectations. There is an ambivalence in that these images are not only critiqued but are also celebrated as an acknowledgement of their essential role on our common culture.

So the images of space explorers in their suits and space buggies represents an ideal of exploration, of new technologies enabling us to conquer new territories, move in new dimensions – but has all this really lived up to our expectations? And there is of course the added poignancy of the artist himself being physically constrained - the limitations of which are reflected in the realisation of the imagery.

“Having a period of time to focus on one project allowed me to direct my energy to one task… the financial and technical support meant that I was able to work beyond my usual means and make work which was more ambitious than anything else I have made… Although I did not finish the paintings, I have been left with work that I have learnt a great deal from…

At present I am still assessing whether the work will succeed when completed… even if the paintings do not reach a point of resolution, I feel I have learnt better how to tackle such large-scale work in the future…

…The decision to undertake all the filming myself was a good one because it resulted in some interesting shots that I was forced to make to maintain variety in the filming… The aspects of performance present in this project is also something that I now feel more confident working with in the future.”
