The
Folly Gallery, Lancaster
The vision for the Folly is to be
a centre of excellence for emergent contemporary art practice. It
promotes innovative practices in new media, sonic art, video, photography
and live art. It aims to establish itself as a focus for dialogue
and discourse around the creative uses of digital media, and as
a base for research based practice.
To achieve these aims, the Folly runs
an online projects and discussion forum to explore the creative
use of new media. It provides access to a range of resources, including
a darkroom, a linear video editing suite, a Linux based media lab,
an Apple Mac based laptop suite and good online access with broadband
connections.
It has two galleries, which are open,
every day except Sunday, and with a late evening on Wednesday. It
also runs events, discussion sessions, training programmes and other
activities to develop skills and provide progressive experiences
for the participants.

The brief
The bursary aimed to place an artist
working in installation, digital technology or other new media in
residence with a number of local artists to act as a catalyst for
a broad range of interventions in non gallery settings. It was also
anticipated that documentation of the process, and ongoing discussion
activities online, would form a significant part of the practice.
In addition, the artist was expected
to participate in and lead part of a one-week practical workshop
based at the Gallery during the summer period.
