Karen Welsh
“Intra
–“
On 31 May 2003 Karen’s first solo exhibition ‘Intra-‘
opened at the Richard Attenborough Centre, the culmination
of her residency.
“Intra – explores evocative
subject matter through pen and ink drawings, digital video
projection, ceramic sculpture and oil painting.
The human form can create a strong emotional
response. Baby forms invoke feelings of vulnerability, dependence
and isolation alongside a need to protect and defend. The
use of cast pig’s ovaries, sourced from Dr Alireza Fazeli
at the Academic Unit of Reproductive and Developmental Medicine,
Dept. of Obs and Gynae. in Sheffield, examines the physical
nature of human genetics, where a fine line is drawn between
acceptability and revulsion.
Karen Welsh explores her subject matter
in a way that brings together widely publicised issues with
deeply personal ones. She strongly believes in utilising technical
skills that are based in tradition to create 3D sculptural
forms and 2D artwork. “
