Angel Row Gallery, Nottingham
Angel Row Gallery presents a challenging
and wide-ranging programme of contemporary visual art, with exhibitions,
events and activities in an environment that is lively, welcoming
and accessible. The Gallery is committed to developing new audiences,
and to providing opportunities for participation and debate around
the understanding of contemporary art. Since opening in 1991 it
has established a national reputation for its programme, recently
exhibiting artists Sian Bowen and Sutapa Biswas, amongst others.
‘Self’
‘Self’ is a touring exhibition
that explores complex physical, cultural and personal identities
through the work of a wide group of artists, who investigate ‘belonging’,
our sense of who we are through our relationships with others. Through
photography, jewellery and installation, the artists challenge stereotypes,
respond to their own experience of the status quo, and draw attention
to the value of difference and diversity.
‘Self’ runs from Wed.
17 November until Sat. 8 January 2005.
The Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10.00 – 5.00, Wed.
10.00 – 7.00

The brief
The Gallery was seeking an artist
whose work would relate and respond to the exhibition ‘Self’.
The artist was offered a studio space situated within the gallery
itself, for the duration of the exhibition. Whilst this put restrictions
on the artist’s practice (no noise, fumes or dust), it did
mean that similar themes, of sense of self, of cultural or physical
difference, could be fully explored within the context of ‘Self’.
The exhibition was seen as a key resource for the development of
the artist’s work.
The artist was expected to give at
least one presentation to an invited audience about their work.
Opportunities would also arise for the artist to hold open studio
sessions, or assist with workshops, as part of the on-going education
programme.
