Bolton Museum and Art Gallery
The Museum and Art Gallery were built
in 1938, as part of an extensive new Civic Centre. It has significant
collections of art, archaeology, Egyptology and natural history.
It also has the only significant collection
of paintings by Thomas Moran, a local artist who emigrated to America
where he painted landscapes of the west, to encourage pioneers to
move out from the east.
Recently the Museum acquired an important
alabaster statuette for its Egyptology collection. Such acquisitions
raise public debate about 'value' and 'cost' in relation to art
and heritage.
The Museum also carries out a programme
of outreach work with particular groups within the community, as
well as 'drop-in' workshops in the Community Gallery at weekends.

The brief
The artist was expected to engage
with some aspect of the extensive collections held at the Museum
and Art Gallery, and to interrogate perceptions of value or similar
issues. It was anticipated that the outputs would be interventions,
installations or performance; no exhibition opportunity was included.
The artist was expected to adopt a challenging and innovative approach
to some aspect of the collections.
There was an opportunity to participate
in the education programme, but this was not expected to be an substantial
part of the residency.
