The Courthouse
Otley
In June 2004 the 19th. century Courthouse
was opened as an arts and resource centre. Its renovation as an
environmentally sound building open to all came about through the
efforts of local people.
The Centre comprises a multi-purpose
space for performances, conference rooms and workshops, an IT suite,
sound technology room, offices, crech and community bar. One of
the cells has been retained untouched, as an Heritage Cell.
The Courthouse will host workshops,
regular arts sessions, rehearsals and perfomances, providing both
arts participation and training opportunities for the local community.

The brief
The Courthouse was seeking an artist
to signal the arrival of the new Centre and signpost its presence
in the town. The artist was expected to respond to the Centre or
its immediate surrounds, creating temporary work for display in
or around the Centre. The work could be in any visual art medium,
but needed to be challenging and innovative. There were opportunities
for the artist to work interactively with members of the public,
through the developing programme of workshops.
