Alexis Stevens
Alexis works with painting and small
scale constructions in response to architectural spaces. Since a
visit to Venice, she is particularly interested in exploring ambiguities
between inside and outside space, which can also be seen as a division
between internal and external, the imaginary and the real.
During her degree course at Falmouth
Art College, she concentrated on painting, but latterly started
to respond to a desire to move away from the canvass space and to
work with the gallery space itself. She has started placing constructed
objects within the gallery space, thus setting up abstract dialogues
with the paintings and vice versa. This exploration of architectural
space links in with her growing interest in psychology. Disjointed
narratives are evolving in her work, which when combined with the
abstract form of her work, give few clues for the viewer, but set
up a sense of the uncanny.
These images are of work in progress.
